Amalgamated Sugar has been working with BasicSafe since 2011. The company previously managed training efforts with spreadsheets. The process was time-consuming, and training files were sometimes lost. When BasicSafe pitched their services to Safety Manager Mark Hyer, he was initially impressed with other tools within the software suite. The company now uses the training module along with several others, but what made the Safety Training tool outstanding was BasicSafe’s ability to customize it to suit Amalgamated Sugar’s needs in 2016. They wanted to go paperless for training, so they developed a computer-based quiz management capability for computer, tablet and phone. It corrects the quiz and shows the correct answer, which simplifies testing a great deal.
With paperless training, safety managers and supervisors now have a vehicle to search an individual or group of employees and learn whether they are current or deficient. Managers are notified when training is completed, and results are uploaded into their training record. When the training module is created in BasicSafe, it can be indicated whether it's one time or recurring.
With no file cabinet or spreadsheet to parse through, Amalgamated Sugar significantly reduced the amount of time spent verifying employee training statuses by half.
This increased company productivity—time previously spent tracking training could now be allocated to other efforts, making it more efficient.
Amalgamated Sugar was able to track employee training for certifications such as CPR or asbestos abatement in a more organized way. The tool provided visibility into which employees were up to date with training, as well as alerts for upcoming certification opportunities. This information allowed employees to plan ahead for training, positively affecting how many stayed current with certifications.
Amalgamated Sugar continues to use BasicSafe’s safety training tool, in addition to other products, with a total of nine tools. They plan to use more as their needs change. The company has three locations and several satellite offices also overseen by their safety managers. The safety tool allows managers to track employee training for the satellite offices remotely and by calling on administrative support to verify training.
